The deregimentation job at home: a new economy for the new century

Japan's economy needs to undergo a reorganization if it is to achieve moderate economic growth during the next few years. Some areas that need revamping include government regulation, education, scientific research and the national budget. A multi-party political system would also help.

US computer makers are concerned that Japan is subsidizing its domestic computer industry by allowing schools to purchase computers exclusively from NEC Corp. NEC computers are more expensive than those of US competitors, who have made inroads in the Japanese market.
