Still made in China
Article Abstract:
Exporters in Hong Kong are confident that their export business will not be adversely affected by competition from countries such as Vietnam because their customers buy in bulk. This makes it difficult for them to go elsewhere and have their orders met. Hong Kong has access to China's labour market, it has a port and a telephone system, plus a reputation for quality. Vietnam may have an abundance of cheap labour but it does not have the expertise or materials to compete. If retailers do decide to try Vietnam the first indicators will appear in Spring 1998 when they order their goods.

Managing, barely: finding home-grown managers is a major headache for companies in Asia
Article Abstract:
Singapore has launched a plan to produce a further 7,000 university graduates a year from 2000, and Malaysia has also passed laws to increase the number of college places. The rest of Asia is also short of skilled manpower, and the focus of attention has mainly been on specialists, but companies are increasingly seeking middle managers with finance and marketing skills. China in particular is experiencing pressure on the skilled labour market, due to years of explosive growth.
