Strange bedfellows; can government fight graft and keep Rao's support?
Article Abstract:
India's new government controlled by a fragile United Front coalition will have a difficult challenge in keeping its promise to fight corruption while maintaining the support of the Congress Party. The government of Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda has a very small majority in Parliament and is dependent upon the support of the Congress Party's 140 seats for survival. In order to maintain its campaign promises to fight corruption, the United Front will be forced to attack many Congress Party leaders on charges of graft.

Saffron advantage; Hindu party realigns itself for electoral gains
Article Abstract:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) became the largest opposition group in India's parliament in 1992 but has since met with a number of setbacks. The BJP has softened its nationalist Hindu and anti-Muslim image lately and stands a good chance of regaining power in the country's national elections that began on Apr 27, 1996. Support for the BJP comes increasingly from middle-income merchant classes who have become disillusioned with government rule under the Congress party.
