Stretching Jerusalem
Article Abstract:
Israel has decided unilaterally to expand Jerusalem in a move that could damage prospects for peace with the Palestinians. Israel and the Palestinians agreed not to change Jerusalem's status until a final settlement had been agreed. Israel started building a large Jewish settlement in an Arab area, a move which halted the peace process. Palestine could try force which would be suicidal and have serious repercussions, or seek help from world opinion, which tends to be against Israel. Israel is moving away from peace with Palestine, and violence appears inevitable unless Israel changes its path.

Spotty freedom
Article Abstract:
The US is seeking to encourage a dialog between Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, and Palestinian leader, Yassir Arafat. The Oslo agreement of 1993 stipulated increased self-rule for Palestinians to 1999, after which a permanent agreement was scheduled. A new agreement could increase land from which Israeli forces have withdrawn by 13%. Yassir Arafat could declare a Palestinian state if no agreement is made as scheduled in May 1999. Israel is expanding its settlements and Palestinian areas are isolated from each other.
