Strong current of change
Article Abstract:
Surveys of the UK energy industry in the period following deregulation forecast that consolidation will be a dominant industry feature. A survey by PriceWaterhouseCoopers predicts that up to 50% of electricity suppliers will leave the industry before 2004, leaving a total of four to seven suppliers, including Eastern and Scottish Power. Cap Gemini's survey predicts that there will be only five suppliers in Europe. Other changes predicted by the surveys include the replacement of the electricity pool and the development of more alliances between existing suppliers and other diverse interests.

The kindest cuts of all
Article Abstract:
Deregulation of the UK energy industry has given businesses an opportunity to assess their energy policy. They may consider the installation of combined heat and power (CHP) systems, which can reduce costs whilst offering a more environmentally-friendly energy solution. The CHP system is installed at the user's site so freeing the user from supply problems. They are 90% efficient, compared to less than 40% for an electric power station. Energy savings of approximately 35% give the user a competitive advantage and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
