Strong sterling's silver linings
Article Abstract:
The strength shown by the pound sterling in the late 1990s is being touted by some economic doomsayers as parallel to the sterling's strength in the 1979-1981 period, which preceded a recession. The sterling's current strength is a result of the robustness of the domestic economy, which has increased consumer spending, and the increasing competitiveness of British firms, especially in manufacturing. Analysts believe that the current strength of the sterling will result in a long-term benefit on manufacturers and the British economy, since neighboring countries have not reach the level of productivity the UK currently enjoys.

Harold Major
Article Abstract:
John Major's waffling position on devaluation of the British pound is similar on the surface to former Prime Minister Harold Wilson's posture toward his 1967 devaluation. Another striking similarity between Major and Wilson is the perceived lack of direction in their administrations.
