Stuck on welfare

Clinton promised to enact reform of the welfare system when he ran for president in 1992, but he has vetoed Republican efforts to cut welfare because he believes they were too harsh. The latest bill to be passed by Congress is harsher yet, but he may be forced to sign it for poltical reasons.

Dole's vaunted campaign re-launching bogged down at a Wisconsin appearance, where he criticized the Clinton welfare reform, while endorsing the state's GOP welfare innovator, Gov. Tommy Thompson. Unfortunately, Thompson's plan is only partially successful, and Clinton has already embraced it.

What the centre holds
Article Abstract:
Pres Clinton is trying to present himself as a centrist politician, and he has recently named a new task force on welfare reform. Such reform is greatly needed, as the present system encourages people to remain on welfare, but the subject is emotionally charged.
