Second republic?: multiparty conclave proposes dramatic political change
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's top politicians considered sweeping proposals at the National Development Conference held in December 1996. President Lee Tneg-hui restored constitutional rule in 1991, although few people expected the recommendation of a major redesign. Radical proposals include the alternation of power between the executive and legislative divisions with the aim of removing the stalemate in the legislature and improving discipline amongst political parties. There was a recommendation to suspend local elections in an attempt to eliminate corruption in the election system.

Teasing the dragon
Article Abstract:
The pro-independence cause in Taiwan are gaining momentum as the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) adopts a "one China, one Taiwan" policy and campaigns to recognize Taiwan's political identity separate from China. Furthermore, their aims were aided by the breakdown of diplomatic relations with South Korea and the doubtfulness of Taiwan's application for membership in the Gatt. The DPP's renewed vigor is a reaction to its poor showing in Taiwan's first full national elections.

Tactical manoeuvres: participants differ over meaning of Singapore talks
Article Abstract:
China and Taiwan espouse differing views of their first unofficial talks, which were held in Singapore on April 27-29, 1993. China's government sees the talks as initiating the eventual unification of Taiwan with China, whereas Taiwan's government believes it gained international prestige from China's willingness to negotiate as equals. However, Taiwan's political parties remain divided over whether and how to pursue unification.
