Sun sets on monitor makers: many shift production to sites outside Taiwan
Article Abstract:
The computer monitor industry of Taiwan is fast becoming sunset industry as the Asian currency crisis forces many of Taiwan's computer monitors to compete in price with those produced in South Korea. A survey of the profitability of the industry showed the sector's 1998 first quarter sales falling by 13% to reach $1.9 bil, as a result of prices dropping 22%. Local production fell by 10.7% to only 4.08 mil units. Many Taiwanese computer monitor makers are establishing production facilities in China to better compete in the price category. Industry observers note that the computer monitor sales of computer equipment manufacturers remain untouched due to the stable market for their products.

Taiwan stocks may be on the verge of taking a breather; Chuntex's warning of 1998 loss is expected to stoke fears of similar undisclosed problems
Article Abstract:
Taiwan-based computer monitor manufacturer Chuntex Electronic's negative financial performance in 1998 may trigger uncertainty in the country's electronic stocks. The company suffered around US$100 million earnings decline due to inventory drops and stiff competition in the US. Local stock analysts think that the negative development is widespread and may vary only in the depth of financial losses. Investors will most likely become highly wary of companies that post sudden drops in finances. This, in turn, would lead to the decline of the stock market.
