Surface calm: student protesters lie low and regroup
Article Abstract:
There have been widespread anti-government demonstrations in Burma, although order has returned now that universities and colleges are closed. The All Burma Students Union (ba kha tha) is thought to have been revived and other students are joining a human-rights-oriented non-governmental organisation. There is frustration about lack of negotiations between the junta, the State Law and Order Restoration Council and the NLD, and rising inflation which has led to higher food prices. There is no overt support for the National League for Democracy, the main opposition party, but they have the same goals.

Independent streak: Vientiane pushes Mekong basin concept
Article Abstract:
Following the collapse of trade links to its former communist brethren, Laos has sought a more independent geopolitical role, one now centering on the Mekong River Commission. That organization may move its headquarters from Bangkok, which is not even on the river, to Vientiane. Laos hopes to use it as a springboard for fostering better bilateral ties with its neighbors, thereby improving its security. It benefits from being small and inoffensive, as well as less prone than others to political turmoil.

Need for speed
Article Abstract:
Although Bangladesh's economy is expected to grow at a rate of 5.4% in 2003, economists caution that this is not enough for a country where most people live on less than a dollar a day. A growth rate of up to 8% is needed to meet the poverty reduction target of 50% by 2010.
