Swapping urbanism ideas in forward-thinking Toronto
Article Abstract:
The annual Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) was held in Toronto, co-sponsored by Urban Villages Forum and Urban Design Group of the UK, although participants were mainly North American. There was a call to halt urban sprawl and a review of the charter's main principles, such as restoring urban centres, mixed land use and building practice based on participation by citizens in planning and design. Concerns were voiced about the imminent loss of Toronto City's independence and its effect on progress.

Opening up Madrid to international ideas
Article Abstract:
Madrid, Spain has commissioned five foreign architects to present proposals for expressing the culture of the city. The designs by Hans Hollein, Mikko Heikkinen and Makku Komonen, Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid and Stanley Tigerman differ in scale and depth of presentation. Some could become real projects while other are vague or on a huge scale. The exhibition of the proposals is interesting but the omission of Spanish architects is regrettable.

Interchangeable ideas
Article Abstract:
The Interchange road shadow conference is an integrated event exploring the benefits of integrated transport, services, technological infrastructure as well as its design. The main problem of the event reflects the interchanges in the eyes of the organizers that are viewed as much as 'processes' as they are 'products'.
