Switzerland: big deals lead to modest recovery
Article Abstract:
Mergers and acquisitions declined in Switzerland to 1994, when they began to recover with a 7% rise to 266 compared with 1993. In 1989 and 1990 over 400 transactions were carried out with more than 100 alliances. An increase is likely in 1995 compared with 1994, though transactions could be in the form of co-operation agreements or alliances. Buyers are likely to continue to remain cautious and focus on price. Earnings value is coming to be seen as more important than the value of assets.

Swiss M&A market bucks the upward trend
Article Abstract:
There were 294 acquisition or merger deals involving a Swiss target or acquirer in 1995, down by around 17% from 1994. This decline went against the international trend, which saw record merger and acquisition activity in 1995. There were positive financing conditions for merger and acquisition deals in Switzerland in 1995, but the country saw very little economic expansion. This has prompted many companies to focus on downsizing, outsourcing and restructuring.

An abundance of deals
Article Abstract:
Over half as many more mergers and acquisitions took place in Switzerland during 1996 than in 1995. The highest-value deal during the period was the merger of pharmaceutical businesses Ciba and Sandoz. Both businesses off-loaded their special chemicals businesses before the deal went ahead. Information on other mergers and acquisitions is given. Swiss organisation ABB acquired ten companies during the period.
