The latest introduction of their products by two superior competitors, Autodesk and Bentley in the AEC CAD field, show that changes to the former's AutoCAD 2004 are superficial, while the latter's MicroStation V8.1 has been comprehensively improved. Several new and powerful features of MicroStation are demonstrated at its launching ceremony, grandly entitled 'World Tour'.

Autodesk's strategy of regularly retiring and upgrading software is critiqued with particular reference to its AutoCAD 2004 product. It is suggested that in its eagerness to avail of short-term benefits, the company is jeopardizing its chances of gaining new customers and retaining existing ones.
