TURBULENT TIMES AHEAD
Article Abstract:
The cigarette segment, which accounts for 20 percent of the total tobacco consumption in India, posted an estimated turnover of 103.3 billion units in 1997-98. The growth in volumes was 1.3 percent in 1997-98 against 7.7 percent in 1996-97. The fall in growth was mainly due to huge increase in excise duty in 1997-98. Volume growth in 1998-99 is likely to stagnate following the 6-11 percent increase in excise duty. Excise duty payments account for about 53 percent of a company's gross turnover while raw materials account for 23 percent. (khr)
