TATA TEA (TTL)
Article Abstract:
Tata Tea Ltd (TTL) owns and operates 53 tea estates covering over 25,130 hectares of land. Its gardens are spread in the north east and southern tea regions. During 1997-98, TTLs gardens had an average yield of around 2,036 kilograms (kg) per hectare in North India and 2,931 kg per hectare in South India. It produced around 60 million kg of tea of which 38 million kg were in polypack form and the remaining in loose form. Its polypack brand, Tata Tea, holds 25 percent share of the packet tea market. TTL's performance during the second quarter of 1998-99 was affected by the Russian crisis and the excise duty hike on branded tea which affected domestic packet tea sales. TTL's sales and profit growth for the second half of 1998-99 are expected to be affected by lower tea prices. (tsm)

MARCHING AT SNAIL'S PACE
Article Abstract:
Production of aluminium in India increased by six percent to 554,000 tonnes in 1997-98 (524,000 tonnes in 1996-97) Aluminium consumption grew by 1.7 percent (2.6 percent). The slower growth in consumption is attributed to lower offtake from the construction and automotive segments. Investments in the electrical sector have declined due to cash crunch faced by the state electricity boards. In 1997-98, imports of aluminium were low due to increase in customs duty. (tsm)
