TELCO OFFERS DISCOUNTS TO LIFT SAGGING SALES, DEALER MORALE

Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco), a leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, plans to introduce several incentive schemes for its dealers, to cut down mounting inventories. The total inventory between Telco and its dealers is at 11,000 units. Telco's schemes include a two percent discount on purchase of a truck, if the payment is made on the spot. Telco sold 1,284 heavy and medium commercial vehicles during April 1998 and 2,444 vehicles in May 1998. It sold 1920 light commercial vehicles in April and 2,529 vehicles in May 1998. Sales of Sumo, its utility vehicle were 1,353 in April 1998 and 3,070 vehicles in May 1998. Tata Engineering Locomotive Company (Telco), India's leading vehicle manufacturer, plans to hive off its axle, gear-box and engine units into separate joint venture firms. Tata AutoComponents (TACO), the auto components arm of Tatas, is likely to promote Telco's joint venture companies. TACO has already signed a pact with Eaton Corporation to form joint venture for axle. TACO is also negotiating with international firms to float joint venture companies for engine and gear-box. The global firms which are on the race are Meritor, a part of Rockwell, for gear-box joint venture and Cummins for engines. (gs)

TELCO NEGOTIATING SALE-LEASE-BACK DEAL

Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco), a commercial vehicles producer, is said to be negotiating with financial institutions for a sale and lease back arrangement. The arrangement is for production equipment imported for Mint, its small car. The move will reduce the liquidity crunch and help in repayment of outstanding loans taken from banks and financial institutions. It will also help to reduce the interest costs of Telco. (ag)
