TELCO SALES GO UP IN DECEMBER
Article Abstract:
The sale of vehicles by Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO) showed an increasing trend in December 1998 compared to the same period in 1997. The company sold 10,376 vehicles in December 1998 as against 8,408 during the same month in 1997. However, the sale of all vehicles, barring cars, showed a downward trend during December 1998 compared to sale in November 1998. Sale of medium and heavy commercial vehicles, during December 1998, stood at 5,018 as against 5,085 in November 1998. Light commercial vehicles recorded sale of 3,304 (3,782 during November 1998) and utility vehicles 1,963 (2,129). But the car sales were up at 91 against 77 in November 1998. There was drop of 26 percent in domestic sales of commercial vehicles(79,457) during April-December 1998 compared to the same period during 1997(1,07533) (psr)

HM ROLLS OUT LANCER
Article Abstract:
Hindustan Motors Ltd (HML) has started the commercial production of Mitsubishi Lancer, a new car. The car will be produced in technical collaboration with Mitsubishi Motor Corporation of Japan at HML's plant in Thiruvallur, near Chennai. The car has been re-designed to meet the Indian road conditions. It will enter the Indian markets on October 1, 1998. The petrol version of Lancer will cost Rs733,995 in Delhi, Rs770,285 in Mumbai, Rs746,629 in Bangalore, Rs729,656 in Chennai, Rs724,524 in Hyderabad and Rs702,980 in Ahmedabad. HML will be marketing the car through its Red Line dealer network. HML's plant has a capacity to produce 24,000 cars per annum. (ag)

INSTALLED CAPACITIES EXCEED TOTAL SALES

The total installed capacity in the auto industry was 57.64 lakh units in 1997-98 which was 40 percent more than the total vehicle sales at 39.84 lakh units. During the first quarter of 1998-99, the industry registered zero percent growth. The positive growth was witnessed in the passenger cars segment with one percent growth in sales, three-wheelers registered six percent, and two-wheelers three percent. The commercial vehicle sector registered 34 percent negative growth while multi- utility vehicles 34 percent decline. The exports of the industry declined by five percent. (gs)
