TYRE COS CHECK ALIGNMENT FOR A SMOOTHER RIDE
Article Abstract:
The tyre industry in India comprises 29 companies with an installed capacity of 37 million tyres. The performance of the industry appears to be good despite the overall recession in the automobile industry. The capacity utilisation of the industry was 92 percent in 1997-98. Of the total tyre consumption, the replacement market accounted for 56 percent, original equipment segment 37 percent and exports 6 percent. A total investment of Rs2,500 crore has been made in this industry. It made a turnover of Rs9,500 crore. It netted Rs900 crore through exports. The average annual growth was 11 percent and annual export growth 32 percent. The industry has fixed an export target of Rs900 crore for 1998-99. In the first 7 months of 1998-99, tyre exports fell by 3.3 percent at 12.02 lakh units (11.63 lakh units in the same period of 1997-98). In terms of value, the income from tyre exports was Rs407.39 crore. Some of the major tyre manufacturing companies are MRF Ltd, Apollo Tyres and JK Industries. (gs) (kvr)

TYRE EXPORTS DECLINE BY 5.06% IN FIRST HALF

The Automotive Tire Manufacturers' Association has stated that tire exports in the first half of 1998-99 have declined by 5.06 percent to Rs350.06 crore mainly due to the decline in the exports of truck and bus tires. Tire exports to Asian markets fell by 38 percent but exports to North and South America increased by 37.39 crore in the first five months of 1998-99. The US accounted for 30 percent while West Asia accounted for 20 percent of the total tire exports of Rs903 crore in 1997-98. (khr)

India's tyre export for 1997-98 was at Rs903 crore and is likely to exceed Rs1,000 crore. Over 1.7 million truck tyres were exported in 1997-98. In the last ten years tyre exports have grown at an annual compounded rate (AGCR) of 32 percent. JK Industries together with Vikrant Tyres have contributed 26 percent of total tyre exports. Apollo has contributed 16 percent of the total exports while Ceat 16 percent and MRF 13 percent. (gs)
