Tactical alliance: ruling party's local factions block opposition
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party has allowed unendorsed candidates to run under its banner for the Legislative Yuan elections to undermine the Democratic Progressive Party. Approximately 45 such candidates are in the running for the Dec 19, 1992 elections. These candidates are depending on the support of KMT's local factions, the party's vote allocation system and vote-buying towards the last days. They avoid controversial discussions on Taiwan being a part of China, and stick to safer issues such as fairer taxes and construction projects.

Up and running: opposition defines the style of the new legislature
Article Abstract:
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the governing Kuomintang (KMT) Party's main opposition, is vigorously exercising the greater power it now wields in Taiwan's legislature. The DPP's 51 members advocate Taiwanese independence, in contrast to the KMT which remains committed to unification with China and bureaucratic interests. The DPP's control of important posts and influence on committees has increased its sway in the legislature, which began its second session in Mar 1993.

Opposition ablutions
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's oppositionist parties are plagued by factionalism. The dominant opposition party, the Democratic Progressive Party, has also been stained by allegations of vote-buying among its senior members. The party has, therefore, been forced to resort to a primary for the choice of its candidates in the Dec 1992 elections. The party has a sizeable membership numbering 40,000. This figure represents a 50% rise from the figure registered four months earlier.
