News-stand stars: sports dailies catch commuters' fancy
Article Abstract:
Sports dailies are becoming increasingly popular in Japan because of their colorful presentation and reports of scandals and romances. While the circulation of other Japanese print media is likely to fall because of the recession, the circulation of sports dailies is likely to increase by 3-4% over 1992. The sports dailies focus on celebrities and athletes and include articles on sports, gambling, leisure and entertainment.

Giving it back: declining economy sparks debate on tax cuts
Article Abstract:
Japanese politicians and bureaucrats are engaged in heated debates over proposed tax cuts to boost the economy. Officials at the ultra-conservative Ministry of Finance are against the plan since it would create a huge fiscal burden. However, politicians from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party as well as those from the opposition feel that tax cuts are necessary to boost demand and to cut short the recession.
