Mexican stand-off: Asian companies remain cool on free-trade pact
Article Abstract:
Asia's less than enthusiastic response to the negotiations covering the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have dampened hopes in Mexico that the possibility of duty-free access to Canada and the US will spur Asian investments in the country. Japanese companies in already established in Mexico during the 1980s are trying to ascertain the advantages to be afforded by NAFTA before they increase their investments. However, these companies believe that Mexico will become an important market with NAFTA. A major obstacle to foreign investment is the unresolved issue of local content.

Spreading the word; a Western import meets Asian tradition
Article Abstract:
Barleygreen, a barley-based health extract made in the US by American Image Marketing is now being marketed in Hong Kong. Barleygreen is supposedly a panacea for health, strength and beauty problems, but the manufacturers make no medicinal or scientifically tested claims about the health drink. Barleygreen's success in Hong Kong, which is a traditional market for herbal remedies, is due mainly to an informal distribution network and word-of-mouth advertising.

High spirits
Article Abstract:
Liquor firms are enjoying brisk business in the East Asian market. East Asia recorded a strong growth in liquor sales, as compared to the fall in sales recorded in other markets. Distilling firms, which have traditionally left the marketing and distribution of liquor in the hands of local firms, are forming their own marketing and distribution networks. These firms are also adopting marketing tactics that cater exclusively to the taste of Asian consumers.
