Taiwan-U.S. partnership is cemented by history, politics and business
Article Abstract:
Taiwan and the US are expected to retain their close links in the political as well as economic areas because of historical reasons. The US supported Chiang Kai-shek in his fight against the mainland Chinese communists and helped finance his founding of a government in the island of Taiwan. In 1995, Lee Teng-hui was democratically elected as president, which was a welcome development for proponents of democracy. In the economic sphere, Taiwan is the biggest buyer of the US' exports.

Beijing's fears played down

Formula unfit for Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Majority of the people of Taiwan deem that China's so-called one country, two systems policy, which may have worked in the Hong Kong handover, can not be effective in Taiwan. Taiwan, unlike Hong Kong prior to the handover, is an established democracy and has a directly elected president. Taiwanese people treasure their independence and do not want to see their legislature demoted to the status of a local government.
