Taiwan's chip blitz
Article Abstract:
The semiconductor industry in Taiwan is currently experiencing a boon which is attributed to strong government support and the strength of the personal computer market abroad. Macronix International Co Ltd and a joint venture by Texas Instruments and Acer Inc are among the largest operators in the country. Despite large profits, some companies are facing the problem of heavy reliance on imports and the high cost of establishing a semiconductor plant. Nevertheless, the industry plans to move ahead by expanding its market abroad and the continuous development of plant facilities.

Hungry for chips
Article Abstract:
The semiconductor market in Asia is growing, and is expected to double by 1996. The microchip market in Asia has grown as Asian microchip manufacturers are unable to keep up with the demands of their electronics industry. Most Asian nations, such as Taiwan and Korea, import as many microchips as they produce locally. Texas Instruments of the US has established joint ventures in Taiwan, with Acer of Taiwan, and in Singapore, with Hewlett-Packard, an American company, Canon, a Japanese company and the Singapore government in order to tap the burgeoning Asian market.

New kids on the block
Article Abstract:
The South Korean semiconductor industry, led by Samsung Electronics, Goldstar Electron and Hyundai Electronics, is being pressured by the world's chip makers to conform to industry standards, particularly in price structure. Foreign competitors are complaining that South Korea has an undue advantage because it is not bound by the minimum price set by both the US and Japan. This situation gives South Korea virtual freedom to undercut its competitors.
