Takeovers: the new technique for cracking the Japanese market
Article Abstract:
A new method for corporations to enter Japanese markets is to acquire existing businesses in the country, but this method requires considerable planning and careful negotiations, due in part to the Japanese government's noted resistance to such ventures. Among the first companies to acquire its way into Japanese markets was the BOC Group PLC of Great Britain, which took control of Osaka Gas Co., the third largest gas supplier in Japan, in the fall of 1982. This deal was followed in close order by Thomas Tilling PLC buying a 70 percent share of Sanshin Enterprises Co., Hewlett-Packard Co. taking formal control over the operation of its joint venture with Yokogawa-Hokushin Electric Corp. (Yokogawa-Hewlett-Packard Ltd.), and Merck and Co.'s acquisition of Banyu Pharmaceutical Co. and Torii and Co.; each of the deals is described.

Why China Went for a Small-Time Copier
Article Abstract:
A small unknown firm has walked off with a twenty year contract from the government to supply copiers to China. Clark Copy International Corp.'s chief executive and founder, Otto Clark, still seems slightly surprised. The small California firm won the contract in competition with such giants as Xerox Corporation. Clark believes that his willingness to share the technology with the Chinese as well as price factors led to his success in negotiating the contract.
