Taking it on the chin: Mauser develops gun system for Tiger
Article Abstract:
Mauser is heading the development of a chin-mounted gun system for the Eurocopter UH-Tiger combat support helicopter of the German Army. Based on Mauser's RMK 30 recoilless automatic cannon, the gun is made to have a high single-shot kill capability against suddenly appearing helicopter threats. Mauser is working with such companies as LFK, the missile systems subsidiary of Daimler-Benz Aerospace, and LITEF, under an advanced experimental study contract awarded last March 1999. The gun system is built around a stabilized integrated turret with the RMK 30 gun, a 40-round ammunition supply, a sensorics package, and a LITEF-made inertial measurement unit. It will be linked to the Tiger's combat avionics and attitude heading reference system and targeted via the pilot's helmet-mounted sight.
