Taming the eastern European tigers
Article Abstract:
Foreign investors continue to be attracted to the regions of central and eastern Europe, despite the lure of the Pacific Rim. The $909 million investment in Telekom Sribja of Serbia by OTE of Greece and Italy's STET, and the $200 million, 51% acquisition of Romanian cement company Romcim by Lafarge of France are among the largest investments in 1997. It is generally easier to make investments in eastern Europe than in Asia, although privatization can be time-consuming. The opportunities for overseas investors in eastern and central Europe are further explored.

Saddled up and racing ahead
Article Abstract:
Danka UK, photocopier and fax distribution and servicing concern, has seen rapid expansion since it was established in 1993, with turnover reaching 347 million pounds sterling in 1994. It has made eight acquisitions, but has pursued a strict policy of rapidly disposing of any non-core units which are part of an acquisition. Its success has resulted from concentrating on a very small area of business, not being tempted to diversify into areas such as computers or telecommunications.
