Tax time for Bongbong: authorities pick an easy Marcos-family target
Article Abstract:
In the Philippines, former congressman Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr was convicted on July 31, 1995, of evading taxes and sentenced to nine years in prison for failing to pay $327 owed from the early 1980s. Marcos contends the conviction was a hypocritical publicity stunt deliberately timed for the day before the Bureau of Internal Revenue's 91st anniversary celebration. The son of a former dictator, Marcos also said it was an effort to make him hand over 75% of the $356 million that the government claims his family holds in Swiss bank accounts.

Commissar of the faith: for MILF chief, autonomy isn't enough
Article Abstract:
Moro Islamic Liberation Front chairman Hashim Salamat insists that only full independence can solve the problems of Muslims on the Philippine island of Mindanao. Rejecting autonomy as a false promise, he expects the Manila govt to fall naturally, and for his own organization to fill the vacuum locally. Salamat is a secretive figure with worldwide connections to Islamic militants, cultivated initially as secretary-general of the Organization of Asian Students in Cairo. While a religious leader, he has a strong military sense.

Estrada's roadshow
Article Abstract:
It now seems likely that the presidential elections in the Philippines will be won by Joseph Estrada. He has campaigned extensively, and his Partido ng Masang Pilipino (Party of the Filipino Masses) has signed up 5 million people. He has won funding from politicians, businessmen, relatives and professionals, and has made particular use of the influence of members of his family. It appears that he has only limited support in the business community, but he has in fact developed a constituency in the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
