Technical profile: laminated glass
Article Abstract:
Architects specify laminated glass for safety and security reasons, and laminated glass also has sound reduction and solar control characteristics. Float glass is produced using a continuous flow process with the thickness controlled by the speed of the flow. Toughened glass is sheets of float glass heated and then chilled rapidly. Laminated glass comprises sheets of float glass bonded together with a layer, or layers of polyvinyl butryal. It can be combined with other types of glass and coatings. A guide to the selection of laminated glass is provided and examples of its use in buildings is given.

Glass as skin and structure: design Antenna's Pavilion at Broadfield House Glass Museum has glass beams and columns which required a new approach to glass technology
Article Abstract:
The Boradfield House Glass Museum in the West Midlands is known as the Pavilion and is an all-glass buillding designed by Design Antenna. The building was constructed using glass beams and columns as supports. The glass panels of the roof rest on laminated beams and featuring silver deposits which reduce solar gain. A combination of Cool-Lite glass and fritted glass is used to reduce the solar energy entering the building.

Reflections on structural glass: in some senses glass is a perverse choice for a structural material
Article Abstract:
Glass is often a perverse choice for a structural material with its unforgiving brittleness. However its favourable characteristics include transparency, relatively high strength, cheapness of manufacture and inertness in most real weathering conditions. The statistical strength of glass can be improved with chemical toughening and heat toughening.
