Telefonica to invest $3.8 billion in its brazilian holdings in 1999

Telefonica S.A., the Spanish Telcommunications group, plans to invest $3.8 billion in the Brazilian companies in whuiich it has interests. They are CRT, Telebras and Telesp Participacoes S.A. In Sao Paul alone the company wishes to install two million new lines by the end of 1999. Personnel cuts are expected, but a voluntary severence program will be inaugurated.

Cesar Alierta, Chairman of Telefonica S.A. of Spain is charged with insider trading. Mr. Alierta is alleged to have used priveledged information in securities deals when he was Chairman of the Spanish tobacco company Tabacalera in 1997.
