Reforming Victoria's public transport system
Article Abstract:
The state government in Victoria, Australia, believes that privatization is the logical next stage in its transport reform programme. New private operators will have strong incentives to offer a safe, clean, efficient public transport system and to attract new passengers. Privatization will also make it possible to make new investment, which is essential to long-term growth and to the quality of the public transport system. There will no longer be day-to-day government involvement in public transport, and passengers will benefit from the fact that private operators will have to offer long-term guarantees.
