Glittering economic prizes
Article Abstract:
There are fashions for economic models, and the US model is the latest to become popular, with benefits seen as low inflation and unemployment, and rapid growth. Yet US gross domestic product per capita has increased by only 1.6% annually on average over 10 years, a similar rate to that of Japan and Germany, excluding the effects of reunification. The US has a poor system of primary and secondary education, inadequate saving, and public infrastructure that is run down. The US should not be complacent, since problems could arise if these problems are not corrected.

Past revisited?
Article Abstract:
The province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, saw particularly bitter conflict during the apartheid era. Significant efforts have been made since that time to improve the province's image, and indeed there were only 226 political killings in the province in 1997, from 1,464 in 1994. The Zulu-nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party, which controls the province, is now seeking to reposition itself as a party for all ethnic groups in South Africa, rather than just Zulus. However, there has recently been violence in Richmond, a small town near Pietermaritzburg.
