Tenaga may be safe - for now
Article Abstract:
Malaysian electricity and distribution firm Tenaga Nasional's swapping of its dollar debt for yen will not be affected by the resurgence of the yen in the short-term. The debt swap occurred in 1998 as Tenaga took advantage of the low interest rates prevailing in Japan. Analysts believe that the value of the yen will not yet pose a problem to Tenaga, which is scheduled to make its first major payment in 2003. The prediction was made on the assumption that the yen would not be able to continue its rally against the dollar-based Malaysian ringgit.

Investors watch for renewed opportunity
Article Abstract:
Talks that Malaysia plans to ease capital restrictions on foreigners have renewed investor interest in the Malaysian stock market. Investors, however, are adopting a wait-and-see stance if Malaysia will restructure after its imposition of capital controls in Sep 1998 and if shares are attractive at current levels. A case in point is Tenaga Nasional, the country's electric utility giant, which has undertaken asset sales that are expected to result in long-term benefits, even as its stock price has increased considerably.
