Territory stages the first meeting of its legislative minds
Article Abstract:
Tung Chee Hwa met with members of the provisional legislature chosen by China's Selection Committee to discuss the future of Hong Kong when it returns to Chinese rule in July 1997. In the meeting, Tung announced plans to have a new legislature elected by 1998 in accordance with China's election rules. Under these rules, 20 members will be elected by Hong Kong citizens, 30 will be selected by specific sectors, and 10 will be hand-picked by the chief executive. Tung, who supports a provisional legislature, refused to say whether he will keep members of the present sitting body in the new legislature.

Hong Kong and Shanghai need each other for growth
Article Abstract:
China and Hong Kong should cooperate with each other to allow mutual growth. The Chinese government can help Hong Kong improve its economic cooperation with China, which will help Hong Kong preserve its ranking as among the top financial hubs worldwide. On the other hand, China would do well to emulate Hong Kong's system. The Chinese government should first launch sophisticated financial-market mechanisms, procedures and means.
