Terror in Chinatown
Article Abstract:
There is a long history of attacks on Chinese in Indonesia, and there are records of attacks in 1740. The Chinese community has settled in Indonesia, building homes and sending children to school, and attacks have tended to be against property rather than people. The wave of attacks in 1998 has changed this, and not all Chinese will return to Indonesia. Riots in May 1998 involved rape and mutilation of young girls and the armed forces reportedly led looters and rapists. There are claims to the army was paid by the Chinese prior to riots, and did not receive the expected protection.
