Western Europe's bumper year
Article Abstract:
Privatization in Western Europe since the early 1980s had left few nationalized industries by early 1998, but major sales in 1998 included the Spanish government's sale of its remaining shares in banking group Argentaria, tobacco firm Tabacalera and electricity provider Endesa. The French government auctioned controlling shares in bank group CIC and insurance companies GAN and CNP. The Italian government made a fourth public offering of ENI, the Portuguese government made a second offering of electric utility EdP, and Switzerland's Swisscom was privatized for $6.4 billion (US). Total privatization transactions in Western Europe in 1998 totaled $50 billion (US), a figure that was two-thirds the record level of $75 billion (US) recorded in 1997. Center-left governments are continuing and even expanding the privatization programs implemented by the center-right governments that preceeded them.

Article Abstract:
The privatization policy in Slovakia under the former government of Vladimir Meciar was considered irregular. As a result, the new coalition government is reviewing approximately 300 privatizations which took place between 1994 and 1998. There are some classes of companies that were not allowed to be privatized, such as those companies in the financial and energy sectors.
