Thai central bank chief plans policy shift

Pridiyathorn Devakula, Thailand's new central-bank governor, will change the country's monetary policy to focus on maintaining healthy foreign-exchange reserves and keeping local currency stable. He will also encourage banks to lend more and not allow the central bank to interfere with deposit or lending rates, with the exception of the interbank rate, which will be raised to a level between the two. Pridiyathorn's plan is discussed.

Thai retailer may win big

Thailand's discount retailer Big C Supercenter PLC is expecting growth rates of 21% and 22% for 2001 and 2002, respectively, making it a good investment according to analysts. Though the Thai economy is experiencing a slowdown, the discount store is still attracting customers and has plans to add five more stores this year to its existing 24 locations.

Hutchison is near Thai pact

A Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.-led consortium is close to being awarded a 12.5 billion baht ($304.4 million) contract to develop a mobile communications network in Thailand. The contract is being awarded by the Communications Authority of Thailand.
