Getting taste for global risk: investors in Japan react to dollar's recent drop
Article Abstract:
Japanese investors got their first real taste of global risk when the dollar dropped sharply against the yen on Oct 8, 1998 to close at 111.73 yen from 134.5. Some investors sold their dollars while some have kept theirs. Others still are not betting everything on a dollar rebounding and have kept only a small portion of the investment in dollar accounts. Analysts predict however that foreign investments will likely continue despite the dampening effect of the drop.

Japan stocks offer investors a hedge

The end of a business era
Article Abstract:
Japan is on the verge of eliminating a 5-decade ban on holding firms in a move that will allow Japanese corporations to improve efficiency, create organizations, and more power in dealing with the labor system. Analysts are optimistic that holding firms will pave for an easier consolidation and will empower the private sector. Corporations are expected to commence restructuring by April 1, 1998 if there will be no hindrance to the plan.
