A stockmarket for China's west
Article Abstract:
Setting up a stock exchange in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China, would play a key role in promoting economic development in western China. At present, development has been very patchy in this region, and it remains very underdeveloped compared with eastern China. Capital flows could overcome the geographical isolation of western China, and would play a role in many investment projects drawn up by local people. It would be possible in the long term to achieve a critical mass of investment which would assist in attracting technology.

South Korea: warming to the west
Article Abstract:
South Korea has been able to achieve a high economic status internationally. However, it is now experiencing problems as production costs rise. The country's financial markets remain closed, and this means that corporate interest rates remain fixed at 12%. Efforts are now being made to improve its business and investment conditions, but this has prompted some opposition. South Korea will not be able to prove its commitment to globalisation until its old systems have been abolished.
