Energy and new courses in architecture
Article Abstract:
The unseasonably warm weather provides evidence that all is not right with our climate. In Energy: Building for the Third Millennium by Peter Smith and Adrian Pitts, they show how to use available technology to make all buildings more self-sustaining in terms of energy. Peter Smith is also planning a new BSc honours course in architecture and environmental design. Buildings represent 50% of the country's energy needs and most are a drain on non-renewable energy resources, and Smith feels that building design must be radically transformed.

When high-tech means high-waste
Article Abstract:
The Joule Proposal, a study programme which is taking place in seven European countries, seeks to cut primary energy consumption, and therefore carbon dioxide emissions, in office-type buildings. It aims to encourage the more widespread use of natural ventilation and 'smart' controls. Areas of work will include developing appropriate solutions to some of the problems associated with natural ventilation and the development of suitable contexts in which new natural ventilation constant air inlets can be used.

Health and safety still a distant dream
Article Abstract:
Little has changed regarding construction site safety despite the Health and Safety at Work Act and the introduction of CDM in 1994. Construction is a highly competitive industry and the increasingly inadequate design information, shorter lead in times and the tight construction programmes, create situations ripe for incident and accident. The situation is further worsened by the low priority given to training.
