The French market for textile washing products: market sectors: softeners

The standard softeners sector led all other sectors in the French fabric softeners market with a 35.2% market value share in 1997. The standard softeners sector, however, has been losing market share to concentrated products sector, which has seen its market share increase by 11.1 percentage points between 1993 and 1997. In contrast, the standard softeners sector has seen its market share decline by 8.4 percentage points over the same period. Individual dose sachets and tumble dryer sheets, meanwhile, maintained their market share. The refills sector was not able to maintain its initial growth surge and actually saw market share shrink from 16.3% in 1993 to 14% in 1997.

Manufacturers of fabric softeners in France have focused on offering product lines with wider range of fragrances to develop the category. The category was introduced in 1996 by Colgate-Palmolive, whose vanilla-smelling Soupline range proved popular with younger consumers. Overall, the fabric softener market is dominated by four major players: Colgate-Palmolive, Henkel, Lever and Procter & Gamble. Those four companies accounted for 85.4% of the market in value terms in 1997, leaving private label products with a 12% market share and 2.6% to minor players.
