Filter cigarettes maintained its popularity as a healthier alternative to non-filter cigarettes, accounting for 88.4% of the sector's volume in 1997. Filter cigarettes benefited from the trend of healthy living prevalent in Europe, continuing to edge out strong traditional dark tobacco cigarettes. The subsector's volume indicated an increase of 5.2 percentage point increase since 1993. The strong consumer demand for filter cigarettes has led Sita to announce the shutdown of its dark tobacco plant at Chateauroux. Other tobacco makers are capitalizing on this trend by introducing cigars with filter tips.

The growth of the cigarette sector of the French tobacco market has weakened relatively from 1993 to 1997 due to a decrease in cigarette consumption. The sector's value share of the market declined one percentage point to 92.8% from 1993 to 1997 as manufacturers hike prices due to increased governmental tax. More consumers are also shifting to cheaper alternatives, such as smoking tobacco. This is evidenced in the declining performance of the sector from a 13.3% rise in value share in 1994 to only 5.2% in 1997.
