The French market for tobacco: total market size: sectoral analysis: value trends
Article Abstract:
Cigarettes maintained its dominance of the French tobacco market in 1997 with a value share of 92.8%. The continued popularity of cigarettes managed to cushion the impact of consecutive price increases, with its value share decreasing by only on percentage point to 92.8%. The price increases have prompted some consumers to try out alternatives, as indicated in the growth in the value share of smoking tobacco by 0.7 percentage points to 4.1% in 1997. Cigarillos are considered as an increasingly popular cigarette alternative, despite a decrease in the value share of the cigar sector by 0.2 percentage points to 3.0% in 1997.

The Italian market for tobacco: total market size: sectoral analysis: value trends
Article Abstract:
Value sales of cigarettes constituted 98.9% of total volume sales in Italy's tobacco market in 1997. The sector's dominance of the market in value terms reflects the sector's large share of the market in volume terms. From 1993 to 1997, the cigarettes sector's market value share has consistently increased, largely because of price increase impositions by the State Monopoly. In comparison, the cigars and smoking tobacco sectors posted nominal decreases in their market value share because of less price increases than cigarettes.
