The French market for tobacco: cigarettes by blend: volume trends
Article Abstract:
The cigarette sector of the French tobacco market was dominated by regular-strength cigarettes, which represented 76% of all sales in volume terms in 1997. The cigarette sector experienced a decline of 9.6% to 84.6 billion units over 1993-1997as more consumers opt for cigarettes that are less harmful. This was especially felt in subsectors for cigarettes made from dark tobaccos, which experienced a decline in their volume share of the sector by 5.9 percentage points to 24% decline in 1997. A growing preference for American-style brands over dark cigarettes was also observed.

Article Abstract:
The cigarettes sector of the French tobacco market was dominated by Seita, which held a 40.8% volume share in 1996. Seita's dominance has eroded slowly due to the increased appel of American-style cigarettes. The company hopes to revive its position, down 6.2 percentage points on 1992, with its new Winfield brand. Another reason for Seita's declining market share is the quicker response of foreign cigarette manufacturer's to changing trends pointing to increased consumer preference in American-style cigarettes over the traditional dark tobacco.

Article Abstract:
Strong consumer demand for less harmful cigarettes has mainly resulted to a decline in the volume share of regular-strength cigarettes by 3.3 percentage points to 63.8% of the sector in 1997. The favorable reception of "lights" cigarettes have led to the proliferation of lighter versions of traditional brands, such as "super-" and "ultra-light" cigarettes as and filter-tipped cigars. The "lights" subsector experienced a growth of 3.3 percentage points since 1993 to gain 36.2% of the sector in 1996.
