Societe Nationale d'Exploitation Industrielle des Tabas et Allumettes (Seita) is the sole maker and wholesaler of cigarettes, cigars and smoking tobacco in France. Seita commands a 40.7% share in the French cigarettes sector. Seita dominates the in both the RYO and cigar sectors with shares of 50.5% and 39.6%, respectively. In the dark cigarette subsector, Seita's Gauloises and Gitanes brands contral a 26.3% share. Its Gauloise Brunes dark cigarette has been strongly affected by the ailing dark cigarette sector, with its share declining to 19% in 1996.

The smoking tobacco sector of the French tobacco market is dominated by Seita, which commands a volume share of 50.5% in 1996. Seita, which manufactures six of the sector's top eight brands, suffered a volume share loss of 4.2 percentage points in 1996 due to increased competition from other manufacturers capitalizing on growing popularity of smoking tobacco as a cheaper alternative to cigarettes. Seita faces strong competition despite the introduction of its Caporal Blond, Caporal Blond Light, and Amsterdamer Extra Mild blends.
