Article Abstract:
The sector for smoking tobacco in French tobacco market displayed the strongest value growth, increasing 65.8% from 1993-1997 and 17.6% in 1997. Certain sectors in the tobacco market have benefited from successive price increases in the cigarette sector. The cigar sector posted a value growth of 28.9% from 1993 to 1997, partly propelled by the increasing popularity of cigarillos, which are promoted as an alternative to cigarettes. The sector also saw an increased availability of mini versions of cigars. Cigars achieved a value growth of 7.2%, vs 5.2% growth in cigarettes.

The French market for tobacco: total market size: market performance
Article Abstract:
The French market for tobacco reached a value of 76.2 billion French francs in 1997, up 5.7% over 1996 and registering a value growth of 34.6% over 1993 to 1997. The market's strong growth is mainly attributed to the increased availability of relatively healthier tobacco products, such as "super-lights" and mini-cigars. The French market is also experiencing the global trend of a decline in the number of smokers. Rothmans has taken the lead of maintaining prices despite tax increases in December 1996 to curb this trend.

The Italian market for tobacco: total market size: market performance
Article Abstract:
Volume sales of tobacco products in Italy were flat for the period between 1993 and 1997, registering only a nominal 0.6% increase to 90,758 tonnes. Anti-smoking campaigns are making their impact, especially on the latter part of the review period; volume sales declined 0.3% and 0.1% in 1996 and 1997, respectively. During the same review period, the Italian tobacco market, however, recorded a growth of 11.4% in real value terms. Market value growth is mainly due to higher levels of taxes being imposed by the government.
