Founded in Italy in 1956, the company has since acquired presence in the cosmetics and toiletries, pharmaceutical and OTC, and household care products markets. Among its products and brands in the surface cleaners market are general purpose cleaners Mastro Lindo, Spic & Span, Baleno, limescale remover Viakal, and Ace Casa bleach. Procter & Gamble landed the third spot as a key plater in the surface cleaners market in 1997, accounting for 15% of sales by value.

Unilever is also present in all six main product sectors of the surface cleaners market, while it operates via its Lever Division in the household cleaning and textile washing markets. The company listed a workforce of 6,093 people in 1996 and net profits of 51.4 billion lira in 1995.
