Data General's managerial coming-of-age
Article Abstract:
Data General was expected by many Wall Street analysts to be just another high-tech firm to meet with initial success only to succomb in mid-life, but the company has been able to rebound from the economic troubles it encountered in the early 1980s to challenge in the international office-automation market. The firm's founder and chief executive officer, Edson D. De Castro, has realized that the demands of the industry require that authority be delegated among executives, and that the success it found in the minicomputer market in the 1970s would not be enough to guarantee success in the 1980s. The company's changing management and marketing strategies and the renewed efforts toward strategic planning are described.

Article Abstract:
Pasquale Pistorio, president and CEO of SGS ATES Componenti Elettronici SpA, an Italian semiconductor manufacturer, joined the company from an executive post with Motorola in a move which many analysts considered a major gamble. Pistorio was able to make the state-controlled company profitable in June 1983, three years after joining the company, ending ten years of losses for the firm.
