The north-east: politics, water and poverty
Article Abstract:
North-east Brazil faces drought, which has hit crops and livestock. Food relief, work-schemes and funds for sinking wells have been provided by the government which has insisted on civic commitees being set up for the distribution of aid. Drought has a more serious impact because of the poverty of the region, which means that there is less incentive for the private sector to supply food and water in drought years. The states of Bahia and Ceara have attracted investment, and there is unrealised potential for an expansion of fruit farming in Rio Grande do Norte. There is a need for more small-scale irrigation projects and better education in the north-east.
