The President is denied opportunity for a second term
Article Abstract:
Philippine President Fidel Ramos expected to run for a second term via a referendum-based constitutional amendment being pushed by his supporters. The Philippine Supreme Court stop his chances by virtually affirmed its earlier decision that voter-initiated referendum could not be used to amend the 1987 Constitution, which limits the president to a one, six-year term. Although Ramos made repeated announcements that he would not run for office even if the constitution is amended, he made little effort to discourage his supporters from pushing for a second term.
