The Russian option: air force eyes MiGs as islands dispute brews
Article Abstract:
A possible purchase by the Royal Malaysian Air Force of 30 MiG-29 fighter aircraft to improve its tactical capability has been related to security problems arising from the regional dispute over the Spratly Islands. Despite criticisms of limited technological and maintenance advantages against MiG-29 aircraft, tests confirmed the fighter aircraft's capacity to the satisfaction of Malaysian authorities. The price of anywhere from $12 million to $20 million for each aircraft may reinforce a decision to use the MiG fleet to strenghten the air force's tactical capacity.

Going under: Bangkok decides on a subway - again
Article Abstract:
Bangkok, Thailand's officials have again reversed an earlier decision on proposed mass-transit systems, opting to put a 21-km section of railway underground rather than elevating it. The subway will cost some 60 billion baht, or 50% more than the alternative, but it should be better for the environment and may hurt property values less. The government will pay about 80% of the cost. Only weeks ago, the overseeing agency was preparing for bids on an elevated system, but the already bad air quality was used by environmentalists to force the change.
